Technology Group Director: Dr Mark Begbie
Dr Mark Begbie has an honours degree in Physics and Electronics from St. Andrews University and a PhD from Edinburgh University, where his thesis focused on the development of liquid crystal over VLSI silicon spatial light modulators and their application in optical data processing. He spent 4 years as a Post-Doctoral Research Assistant and has 6 years of commercial sector experience. Mark joined ISLI in September 2003, to extend the reach of the Institute into the field of silicon MEMS, including integration with CMOS electronics. Since this time he has managed the integration of the physical layer electronics, embedded systems and MEMS technology interests of the Institute into a single integrated systems activity. He is passionate about the role of new and emerging technologies and applications in economic development and sees ISLI as a key bridge organisation able to support the creation of economic value from technological knowledge.
Mark has several patents in MEMS devices and processes for optical communications in the UK, EU and Worldwide. His most recent patent success being in the field of MEMS for application to microphones. This formed a significant part of the purchase portfolio of a pre-IPO start-up by an internationally recognised corporation.

Chairman: Michael Kay
Michael Kay began his career within the computer manufacturing and medical science industries from 1970 before moving to Motorola as Applications Manager for Microprocessors at East Kilbride in 1979. Based mainly in Scotland, Michael conducted extensive customer and project work in Europe, the USA and Asia. He has supported R&D programmes with both Scottish Universities and Industry and in particular with the ISLI on the Alba Campus, where Michael has been a Member of the ISLI Board of Directors since 2000.
Throughout his career Michael has been responsible for a host of new engineering and business initiatives, most notably as the founder and Managing Director of the Motorola Technology Centre in Scotland.
Lead Design Engineer: Dr Cade Wells
Dr Cade Wells has worked in industry over the last 16 years with AT&T Network System UK, Lucent Technologies and STMicroelectronics. In his current role as Lead Design Engineer, Cade has undertaken technical development projects in a range of sectors including Aerospace, Energy, Consumer Electronics and Healthcare. Since 2006 he has also gained significant experience in working with a broad range of SMEs developing innovative products and services by integrating electronics and embedded software. Personal interest areas include imaging/machine vision; low-power embedded processing; wireless communications and low-cost system implementation methods. Cade has an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Electronic System Level Integration jointly awarded from the universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Heriot-Watt and Strathclyde and a Masters of Engineering (MEng) in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Wales, Bangor. Cade is also a Chartered Engineer and member of the IET.

Senior Design Engineer: Fabrizio Gaudenzi
Fabrizio Gaudenzi joined ISLI in 2011. Fabrizio has worked as a Senior Hardware Design Engineer, a Project Leader and a Technical Account Manager for Selcomgroup, the Italian leading EMS. He has a strong background in design for maufacturing and product industrialization within the industrial, automation and packaging industry. He has experience in leading technical teams and managing complex projects for customers such as Tetra Pak, IMA and G.D, worldwide leaders in their respective markets. Fabrizio began his career as a hardware design engineer at the ISMB institute in Turin. He worked in a government funded project aimed to help SME to develop their innovative high tech products. He was involved in the design of wireless consumer electronic products and WSN. He worked with local SME as well as other national and multinational high tech companies such as Accent and Microsoft.
Fabrizio is particularly interested in providing full design support to Scottish SME through the in-house run DoRIES project. He is enthusiastic about it. He enjoys helping entrepreneurs that would like to start their new business, by giving them advise and assistance on suitable electronic enabling technologies, by finding innovative solutions, by building healthy and effective relationships with customers, by enabling the development of a larger network that goes over the wireless experience.
Fabrizio has an honours degree in Physics and Electronic Engineering from the University of Glasgow and an MSc in System Level Integration jointly awarded from the universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Heriot-Watt and Strathclyde.

Senior MEMS Designer: Dr Aboubacar Chaehoi
Dr Aboubacar Chaehoi received his Ph.D. degree in Micro-electronics from Montpellier University in 2005. From 2001 he worked on micro-electromechanical systems design and modeling at the Montpellier Laboratory of Computer Science, Robotics, and Microelectronics (LIRMM – France) where his work concerned the design and characterization of a fully integrated 3-axis accelerometer in CMOS technology using both piezoresistive and thermal transduction a nd the development of FEM and behavioral models for those sensors. He is currently a Senior MEMS designer at the Institute of System Level Integration (ISLI) in Scotland, where he is involved in the design of different MEMS sensors and actuators (accelerometer, pressure sensor, micro-scanner and MEMS DC/DC converter). Aboubacar is also a Chartered Engineer and member of the IET.
